The American Soybean Association (ASA) offered its congratulations Monday to Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Krysta Harden. Deputy Secretary Harden was confirmed by the Senate late Thursday night on a bipartisan vote. Prior to her tenure at USDA, Ms. Harden served on ASA’s staff as a Washington representative. ASA President Danny Murphy, a soybean farmer from Canton, Miss., released the following statement:”ASA sends its warmest congratulations to Deputy Secretary Harden on her confirmation. Ms. Harden was a treasured member of the soy family for many years and took the same work ethic and persistence she showed here at ASA to champion all farmers and USDA stakeholders as Chief of Staff to Secretary Tom Vilsack.”Ms. Harden is a consensus builder, and exactly what is needed to connect the department’s diverse group of stakeholders. As Americans become further removed from the sources of their food, fiber and fuel, USDA faces a daunting challenge, as does all of agriculture. We have no doubt that the Deputy Secretary will meet this challenge with the same balanced, pragmatic approach she has always used to tackle each issue.”ASA commends the Senate for its speedy and bipartisan work to confirm Ms. Harden, and look forward to working with her in her new role.”
If passed, the resolution would request that the State of Alaska continue to fund the Kenai Peninsula College and all Kenai Peninsula campus locations at the current funding level. The current plan calls for cutting roughly $310 million from the state Department of Education and Early Childhood Development from the department’s current $1.3 billion budget. It’s unknown at this time how those cuts would impact the Kenai Peninsula campus. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly will look at a resolution at their meeting on Tuesday asking for the state to fully fund Kenai Peninsula College. University of Alaska system President Jim Johnsen said the system faces a cut of more than $130 million, which could force layoffs of up to 1,300 people and the elimination of programs. In 2018, the borough provided $817,755 to KPC to support postsecondary education to borough residents. KPC enrolls on average 5,700+ students annually, according to the borough. Governor Mike Dunleavy released an amended FY20 budget. The budget proposes a significant reduction to education funding throughout the state. The resolution will be introduced at the borough assembly meeting on Tuesday, March 5.

General view after mudslides in Manizales, Caldas department, Colombia. Photo: AFPFlooding and mudslides in central Colombia have killed at least 16 people, government disaster relief authorities said Wednesday, causing alarm in a country still recovering from recent mudslides that killed hundreds. At least seven people are missing after torrential rains lashed the city of Manizales, government officials said, raising fears the death toll could soar as it did earlier this month in the southern city of Mocoa. There, at least 323 people including more than 100 children were killed when heavy rain caused three mountain rivers to flood on March 31, hurling a tidal wave of mud and boulders into the city.Manizales “is literally cut off by rock slides, mudslides, floods,” Mayor Jose Octavio Cardona told local radio stations. He said the city had been on alert after days of heavy rain, which turned to a torrential downpour overnight.President Juan Manuel Santos suspended his official agenda to travel to the city, the capital of Caldas department — which is, like Mocoa, a remote and difficult region to access.”This is a product of climate change,” he told reporters, calling to “take care” of the environment to avoid such catastrophes. He said on Twitter he had ordered officials from the emergency agency and transport ministries to the city to assess the “grave situation.”Emergency officials said eight neighborhoods had been hit by flooding or mudslides, including one where several homes were buried.Classes in Manizales — where some 400,000 people live — as well as water, electricity and gas services in affected neighborhoods were suspended as a precaution.
Afghan Shiite men carry a wounded friend near the site of suicide attack that targeted a Shiite mosque in Kabul on August 25, 2017. Photo: AFPA suicide bomb and gun attack claimed by the Islamic State group on a Shiite mosque in Kabul killed 20 people and wounded scores more Friday, officials said, the latest assault to highlight deteriorating security in Afghanistan.Gunshots and explosions could be heard during the attack that lasted around four hours and witnesses reported seeing worshippers smash windows to escape. The mosque, in a residential area in the north of the city, was believed to have been packed with dozens of men, women and children when the assailants struck during Friday prayers.“We have 20 killed and more than 50 wounded,” Mohammad Ismail Kawoosi, a health ministry official, told AFP, without specifying how many were civilians.Heavily armed security forces stormed the building and rescued more than 100 worshippers, according to the interior ministry, which had initially put the death toll at 12, including 10 civilians and two security force personnel. It had also put the number of wounded at more than 40 civilians and seven security forces.“The attack is over and the site has been cleaned up by our police,” deputy spokesman Najib Danish told AFP, confirming three attackers were killed by security forces. He told Afghan media that police “blew up a wall behind the building to get in and rescue people”.Kabul police spokesman Abdul Basir Mujahid told AFP a suicide bomber “detonated himself inside the mosque” .People gathered outside had tried to call women and children trapped inside but their mobile phones were not responding, an AFP reporter at the scene said.“Our relatives have been stranded inside the mosque… We believe they have been held hostage by the gunmen. We are very concerned about their safety and may God help us and rescue our loved ones,” one of the onlookers said.Eyewitnesses described horrific scenes inside the mosque as the attackers ran short of bullets and began “using knives to stab worshippers”.Others said the attackers had been armed with rocket propelled grenade launchers and had holed themselves up in the women’s section of the mosque. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the deadly assault via its propaganda agency.“Two ‘inghimasi’ of the Islamic State carried out an attack on a husseiniya (Shiite place of worship) in the Khair Khana sector of the Afghan city of Kabul,” Amaq said, using the terms for suicide bombers who set off explosive vests as a last resort against gunfire.Pools of blood -The presidential palace issued a statement condemning the attack as an act of “cowardice” and vowing to punish the “criminal terrorists”.The assault underscores spiralling insecurity in Afghanistan as a resurgent Taliban steps up offensives across the country, while the Islamic State group, known for carrying out sectarian attacks, expands its Afghan footprint. It comes just days after US President Donald Trump cleared the way for thousands more American troops to be deployed in the war-torn country.More than 10 ambulances were at the scene to take the wounded to local hospitals. Some relatives flocked to a nearby private hospital to search for loved ones who had been in the mosque at the time of the attack.Pools of blood could be seen at the entrance to the medical facility.Shiites, a minority of around three million in overwhelmingly Sunni Afghanistan, have regularly been targeted by IS jihadists recently. They accuse police and troops of failing to protect them.IS has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks killing dozens of Shiites in Kabul over the past year, including twin explosions in July 2016 that ripped through crowds of Shiite Hazaras, killing at least 85 people and wounding more than 400.Earlier this month 33 worshippers were killed and 66 wounded in a suicide attack claimed by IS on a Shiite mosque in the western Afghan city of Herat.

Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn ReddIt Email,(RNS) — As a Methodist minister, the Rev. Jeffrey Edwards takes the Ten Commandments seriously.Especially the ones about not stealing or bearing false witness. Both were broken, he said, in an incident last year when he was falsely arrested and wrongly charged with depositing forged checks into his bank.It was a “traumatic” ordeal, said Edwards, pastor of United Methodist Church of Parsippany, a congregation in Morris County, New Jersey.Edwards recently filed a civil suit in March in Morristown Superior Court, charging Wells Fargo Bank of negligently associating him as the suspect in a fraudulent check plot perpetrated April 16, 2018, at an ATM at a local branch. The 63-year-old says he wants the New Jersey State Police and Wells Fargo to be held responsible for the arrest and accompanying humiliation brought on by falsely labeling him a criminal. He said that state police posted photos of him at the ATM, taken by Wells Fargo, on Facebook. Edwards learned about the photo after a parishioner texted him.ATM photos of the Rev. Jeffrey Edwards, courtesy of New Jersey State Police“I saw this photo of me, provided by Wells Fargo, had been shared 460 times in a few hours,” he said. “There was immediate panic that there would be hundreds of people in my local community who would recognize me.”Edwards worried that people would believe he is guilty, especially at a time when “there has been a lot of broken trust with religious authority figures,” he said.According to Edwards and the lawsuit, the ordeal started when four checks issued by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority were used by someone to counterfeit four separate fraudulent checks using the same check numbers and account numbers. The fake checks, totaling over $6,000, were made payable to a woman named Tyler Mathis, according to published reports, and then were cashed at the same Wells Fargo branch Edwards had deposited his own checks at that morning.Wells Fargo notified the state police when it discovered the fake transactions, according to the lawsuit. The bank was asked to provide images taken at the ATM where the checks were deposited and cashed. The bank reportedly sent photos of Edwards, and a Wells Fargo employee told state police investigators that she could not automatically link the check numbers to the pictures. But according to the lawsuit, she offered to hand-write check numbers on the photos of the man they determined had deposited the counterfeit checks — incriminating Edwards.“My feeling is that Wells Fargo just did whatever they could to quickly get the police off their back,” said Edwards.Detectives eventually summoned Edwards on Sept. 5 to meet at the State Police headquarters in Holmdel. Edwards believed he was coming to clear up the matter, perhaps even receive an apology.Instead he was charged with a third-degree felony, punishable by three to five years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000. He said that officers tried to pressure him into admitting guilt, saying that a jury would believe bank fraud experts rather than the pastor. Those charges were later dismissed. The pastor said he forgives officers and bank employees involved in the case.“But what I cannot forgive is this culture that forces people to admit to crimes they did not do,” he said.New Jersey State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez said department policy does not permit comment on pending litigation.A Wells Fargo spokesperson also declined to comment.“We were recently served with the complaint and are reviewing it. Since this is a pending legal matter, we are unable to comment any further,” Stephanie Ahenkora told RNS.Mathis, the individual to whom the fraudulent checks were written, confessed to her role in the crimes, according to the lawsuit. She allegedly only knew her accomplice as “Cousin Swing” and was not prosecuted. After three required court appearances, Edwards’ case was dismissed for a lack of evidence on Jan. 16.Still, the damage to Edwards’ reputation remains, said Gerald Krovatin, Edwards’ attorney.“Wells Fargo’s conduct tarnished the unblemished reputation that Pastor Jeff has enjoyed for more than 30 years of ministry,” Krovatin said. “That was inexcusable on the Bank’s part and they have yet to even apologize for the harm they have caused to him.”Edwards is seeking unspecified damages but said it is too early to know what he would do with the money. The pastor said that being arrested gave him more sympathy for those who are accused of crimes but don’t have the ability to fight those charges. Edwards said he is thankful that he was able to afford an attorney but knows not everyone else is.“I was under immense pressure to confess to something I did not do,” he said. “It’s being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and if this can happen to me it can happen to anyone else. It can happen to someone more vulnerable.” Share This! News By: Haley Cohen Share This!
Prudential Settles Lawsuits with Bank of America over Mortgage-Backed Securities April 24, 2015 655 Views in Daily Dose, Featured, News, Secondary Market Share New Jersey federal court documents filed earlier this week revealed that Prudential Insurance Co. has moved to settle its ongoing lawsuits with Bank of America NA, Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc., First Franklin Financial Group, and a number of lenders in the mortgage industry.According to Law360, the suits, which were first filed in March 2013, alleged Bank of America and others knowingly sold Prudential $2.1 billion in low-quality mortgage-backed securities—and made false statements about them. Prudential claimed this left the company with more than 10,000 defective home loans, many that eventually went into default or foreclosure. The suits also claimed there were deficiencies in loan-to-value ratios, owner-occupation levels, and more, and that the credit ratings touted by the defendants were “garbage,” according to federal court documents. Many of the claims made by Prudential were dismissed earlier this year, according to Reuters, when District Judge Stanley R. Chesler heard the case in February. Chesler determined that Prudential did not effectively prove that BofA or Merrill Lynch had lied to rating agencies about the quality of their loans, and he dismissed Prudential’s negligent misrepresentation claim.Additionally, Chesler also said Prudential’s “after-the-fact” computer analysis of securities—a key piece of evidence for the plaintiff—was unreliable. In the end, Chesler determined Prudential could move forward with only one count of equitable fraud—an allegation that the defendants acted as underwriters, not sponsors or issuers, on 21 securities. The claim was finally settled Wednesday, when both parties filed a stipulation of dismissal with prejudice. Though terms of the settlement were not stipulated in the court documents, they did say each party would be responsible for its own expenses stemming from the lawsuit. This isn’t the first time Bank of America has been involved in a lawsuit of this nature. In August 2014, it reached a $16.65 billion settlement with federal and state authorities regarding similar liabilities. It was also dealt a $1.27 billion civil penalty in July 2014 when the U.S. government claimed its Countrywide unit defrauded Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into buying low-quality loans. At the time of publication, representatives at Prudential could not be reached. Bank of America spokesman Lawrence Grayson told MReport that the company had no comment on the recent settlement. Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires 0 Comments Share The safety, who last season tore his ACL for the second time in three seasons, has been battling a shoulder injury that has kept him out of three of the team’s last four games.Durability seems to be Mathieu’s only shortcoming in three-plus seasons. That didn’t stop the Cardinals from signing him to a contract extension almost as soon as he became eligible. Mathieu can be an impact player from multiple positions in the secondary, but with 11 missed games in the regular season, availability is a concern. When on the field this season, Mathieu has shown flashes of his pre-ACL tear form, but has not been quite the same player. He has 30 total tackles along with one sack, one interception, three passes defensed and one forced fumble.Last season, though, he was in the conversation to be the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year with 89 total tackles, one sack, five interceptions, one forced fumble and 17 passes defensed in 14 games before his injury. The Cardinals are one of six teams to have multiple players on the ESPN list, joining the New York Giants (Odell Beckham Jr., Landon Collins), Dallas Cowboys (Ezekiel Elliot, Dak Prescott), Houston Texans (DeAndre Hopkins, Jadeveon Clowney), New Orleans Saints (Michael Thomas, Brandin Cooks) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Jameis Winston, Mike Evans). The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact His 1,709 total yards from scrimmage lead the entire NFL, and with at least 100 yards from scrimmage in every game this season, and with 296 receiving yards over the final four games, he would become just the third player in NFL history to amass at least 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, joining Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk.Johnson has done all of this at age 24, which not only makes him an incredible building block for the Cardinals’ future, but one of the best young players in the NFL. According to Mel Kiper Jr. and Mike Sando in an Insider piece, he is the sixth-best player in the league who is under the age of 25.Johnson is the first player since Edgerrin James in 2005 to produce at least 100 yards from scrimmage in each of the first 12 games to start a season. Johnson can do many of the same things we see from Le’Veon Bell, and it shows in where he lines up: outside the backfield 18.6 percent of the time. Johnson is not as proficient as Bell in pass protection, but that might be the only area where he needs work. How confident are the Cardinals in Johnson? They gave him the ball Sunday on fourth-and-1 from their own 34 with 3:47 left in a game Arizona was leading by a point. Johnson picked up 14 yards. While that’s great, Johnson is not the only Cardinal to land on the list, as he is joined by 24-year-old Tyrann Mathieu, who came in at No. 17. Top Stories Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling You don’t have to tell Arizona Cardinals fans how good David Johnson is.Every week, he shows them.Through 12 games this season, the second-year back has amassed 1,005 rushing yards and another 704 receiving yards, along with 15 total touchdowns. In 28 career NFL games, the 2015 third-round pick out of Northern Iowa has scored 28 touchdowns. He’s good. Very good. His coach and teammates believe he would be in the MVP conversation if the 5-6-1 Cardinals were having a better season, and they are probably right.
Fox talks Disney, teases ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ at CinemaCon Rami Malek, who plays the late Queen singer Freddy Mercury in the upcoming film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” discusses the film during the 20th Century Fox presentation at CinemaCon 2018, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, at Caesars Palace on Thursday, April 26, 2018, in Las Vegas. I have no more insight into this transaction than you but I’m holding onto the very basics,” Snider said. “Going forward let’s stay dedicated to the future of cinema.”Disney in December struck a deal to buy a large part of Fox for about $52.4 billion including its movie and television studios, and the unclear specifics and timeline have loomed large for many in the entertainment industry, throwing into question whether Fox, which has become known at the conference for its show-stopping and self-aware theatrics — like always having its distribution chief Chris Aronson perform some bit in costume — would even have its own CinemaCon presentations after this year. The last major studio to make an appeal to theatre owners as the week-long conference comes to an end Thursday night, Fox rolled out an emotional montage featuring highlights from its 85 years of making movies, from “Star Wars” to “Titanic.” Aronson played his part, wearing Hugh Jackman’s P.T. Barnum costume from “The Greatest Showman” in a bit about how he spent the night drinking with Deadpool and Wolverine.“The Greatest Showman” has become a consistent refrain throughout the week. It became a slow-burning hit for the studio that is still building and upending some long-held beliefs about the importance of opening weekends.Released in late December, the film opened to a deathly $8.8 million, but has since grown to over $427 million in worldwide grosses to become the biggest live-action musical of all time. The studio showed footage from the James Cameron and Jon Landau-produced and Robert Rodriguez-directed “Alita: Battle Angel,” a motion-capture and live-action hybrid out this December starring Rosa Salazar. But it was “Bohemian Rhapsody” that caused the biggest stir. The project is 10 years in the making and has not been without its high-profile ups and downs, including Sacha Baron Cohen’s departure from the film and then director Bryan Singer’s abrupt firing in the middle of production in December. Dexter Fletcher was brought in to replace him and finish the film.Fletcher did not appear in Las Vegas to promote the film, instead leaving the task to producer Graham King and star Malek.“One of the biggest reasons it took so long is I knew in my heart… that if we get it right, it would truly be something special,” King said, adding that he is humbled to be part of Queen’s legacy.Malek, best known for starring in the television series “Mr. Robot,” said when he got the role, he fluctuated between thinking it could be a career-defining or career-killing performance.“He is without a doubt the greatest performer that has ever existed,” Malek said of Mercury. “There is no one like this human being.”The film, he said, explores Mercury’s background that will add a level of pain and beauty to the music that so many know so well. It hits theatres Nov. 2.And he’s already gotten some pretty significant praise from someone uniquely qualified to judge. Queen guitarist Brian May emailed Malek after seeing the film to tell him that he was moved to tears, and wrote that, “If Freddie were here today, he wouldn’t be more proud of what we’ve achieved.”___Follow AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr on Twitter: www.twitter.com/ldbahr
